چکیده

In 1938-9 at the British Postgraduate Medical School, King & Aloisi isolated from dried pancreas a glycerophosphoric ester of choline which was found to be readily hydrolyzable. Evidence was also obtained for the existence of a dicholine ester. This work was published only in 1945 owing to war difficulties. In the same year Schmidt, Hershman & Thanmhauser (1945) reported the isolation of aglycerylphosphorylcholine from the same material. They also found that the ester was very rapidly split by N-hydrochloric acid. We have now tried to synthesize the choline esters of both aand f-glycerophosphoric acid in order to examine their metabolic behaviour in animal tissues and other cells. The products obtained by the few methods recorded in the literature for the synthesis of ,-glycerylphosphorylcholine (Arnold, 1940; Ravazzoni & Fenaroli, 1940; Belfanti, Ercoli & Francioli, 1940; Mihalik, Jeney & Uri, 1941) seemed unlikely to us to be esters of choline (1), but rather to be salts of choline and pglycerophosphoric acid (i.e. fi-glycerophosphate of choline) (2).

Effect of a new cognition enhancer, alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine, on scopolamine-induced amnesia and brain acetylcholine.

The present study investigates the effect of the administration of alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine (alpha-GPC) on scopolamine-induced amnesia and on brain acetylcholine (ACh) levels and release in rats. The results indicate that alpha-GPC, when administered orally, reverses the amnesia caused by scopolamine in passive avoidance. The peak effect is observed using 600 mg/kg IG, 5 h before trainin...

Lipid catabolism of relapsing fever borreliae.

Relapsing fever borreliae require lipid compounds for growth in vitro. In this study, the major pathways of lipid catabolism in three species of tick-borne relapsing fever borreliae were investigated. Thin-layer chromatography was used to compare chloroform-methanol extracts of fresh culture media with extracts of exhausted culture media after organisms were removed by centrifugation. The chrom...

Enzymic formation of Glycerol 1:2-cyclic phosphate.

Glycerol 1:2-cyclic phosphate is released simultaneously with glycerophosphate when kidney glycerophosphinicocholine diesterase (EC 3.1.4.2) acts on glycerylphosphorylcholine and glycerylphosphorylethanolamine. The percentage of cyclic phosphate ester formed is increased at pH values below the optimum and is decreased when Mg2+ or Ca2+ is added to stimulate the reaction.

The effects of alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine, caffeine or placebo on markers of mood, cognitive function, power, speed, and agility

Background Alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine (Alpha-GPC) and caffeine supplementation have been shown to improve mental and physical performance. Alpha-GPC administration increases the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and facilitates learning and memory. In athletes, Alpha-GPC supplementation prevents exerciseinduced reductions in choline levels, increases endurance performance and g...

A New Phosphodiesterase in Rat Tissues

1. A phosphodiesterase that cleaves glycerophosphoinositol into glycerophosphate and inositol has been detected in rat tissues. 2. The enzyme requires Mg2+(Mn2+) and has a pH optimum of 7.7. 3. The richest sources of the enzyme are kidney and intestinal mucosa. In pancreas subcellular fractions it occurs largely in the microsomal fraction. 4. The enzyme is inhibited by excess substrate and by t...
